Follow these steps to generate an accurate Bar Bending Schedule for your structural project.
Use this to calculate the bottom reinforcement mesh for isolated or combined footings.
Length & Width: Enter the outer dimensions of the footing concrete.
Mesh Dia & Spacing: Input the diameter of the rebar and the center-to-center distance (e.g., 150mm).
Clear Cover: Standard is usually 50mm for footings in contact with earth.
Calculation: The tool automatically adds vertical "bends" (hooks) based on the footing depth minus the cover.
This handles the "starter bars" that connect your footing to the ground floor.
Excavation Depth: The distance from the top of the footing to the ground level.
L-Bend: The horizontal part of the starter bar that sits on the footing mesh (standard is 450mm or Development Length).
Lap Length: The tool adds a starter lap (default 40d) so the next floor's steel can be tied to it.
Use this for typical column lifts between floors.
Floor Height & Slab Thickness: The total vertical run includes the height of the room plus the thickness of the overhead slab.
Lap Factor: Usually 40d to 50d depending on your structural drawing. This ensures continuity for the column bars moving to the next level.
Lateral Ties: Enter the tie diameter and spacing; the tool calculates the total count from floor-to-floor.
Steel Density: Calculated at $7850\text{ kg/m}^3$.
Unit Weight Formula: $W = \frac{D^2}{162.2}$ where $D$ is the diameter in mm.
Hooks/Bends: Standard 10d hooks are assumed for lateral ties.
Waste Factor: This tool calculates net cutting length. We recommend adding 3-5% extra for onsite cutting waste.
According to IS 456:2000, the standard clear cover is:
Footings: 50mm (due to soil contact).
Columns (Substructure & Superstructure): 40mm (or 25mm for columns with a diameter of 12mm or less).
Lap length depends on the grade of concrete and steel, but a common thumb rule used in this calculator is $40d$ to $50d$ (where $d$ is the bar diameter). For example, for a 16mm bar with a $40d$ factor, the lap length is:
$$16 \times 40 = 640\text{ mm}$$
In floor-to-floor construction, column reinforcement must pass through the beam-column junction and the slab to provide a "starter" for the floor above. Excluding slab thickness would result in steel being too short for a proper lap.
The formula used is:
$$\text{Number of Ties} = \left( \frac{\text{Total Height}}{\text{Spacing}} \right) + 1$$
We add "+1" to account for the starting tie at the base of the column or footing top.
This tool is currently optimized for rectangular and square columns. For circular columns, the main bar calculation remains the same, but the tie length would require the formula for circular rings:
$$\text{Ring Length} = (\pi \times \text{Mean Diameter}) + \text{Hook Length}$$
Q: What is the difference between a Tie and a Stirrup? A: While often used interchangeably, Ties refer to the lateral reinforcement in Columns (compression members), whereas Stirrups refer to the lateral reinforcement in Beams (flexural members).
Q: Why are L-bends necessary in footings? A: The L-bend (also called a "foot") ensures the column starter bars are anchored into the footing. It helps distribute the vertical load from the column into the footing mesh and prevents "punching shear" or pull-out.
Term Definition
Clear Cover
The distance between the outer surface of the concrete and the nearest surface of the reinforcing bar. It protects steel from corrosion and fire.
Development Length ($L_d$)
The minimum length of a bar which must be embedded in concrete to develop the full design strength of the bar via bond.
Lap Length
The length of overlap provided between two reinforcement bars so that force is safely transferred from one bar to the next.

Main Bars
